๐ California exceeds 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days
In a major clean energy benchmark, wind, solar, and hydro exceeded 100% of demand on California's main grid for 30 of the past 38 days.
Why isn't this being shouted from the rooftops? The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed. -
๐ A huge battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
Itโs one of the first real-life examples of how to shift critical grid functions from fossil-fueled plants to clean energy plants. And eventually, the kind of grid services Kapolei has pioneered will have to scale nationwide.
Fantastic news. The faster we can turn off coal the better. -
๐ How Biden's Inflation Reduction Act changed the world
President Joe Bidenโs landmark Inflation Reduction Act continues the push for re-industrialisation by using tax credits, loans and grants in a bid to create a domestic clean energy supply chain. The FT looks at three companies using IRA incentives to invest in the US and examines whether the legislation signals the end of globalisation
Love to see the big solar, wind, and battery factories being built. Very informative. -
๐ Japan PM vows to phase out coal-fired power at climate summit
Kishida said Japan will terminate the construction of new coal-fired power plants that have no emission-reducing measures in place, without specifying the timeline or mentioning the scrapping of existing plants.
I'm a little skeptical about how "emission reducing measures" of a coal-fired power plant could be abused...but assuming best intentions this is certainly good news.ย ๐ -
๐ Former Coal Towns Get Money for Clean-Energy Factories
An Energy Department program designed to create jobs and manufacturing in communities reliant on fossil fuels is backing projects in West Virginia, Colorado and elsewhere.
You can't get people on board with the energy transition if it means them losing their livelihood, even if the industry is already in decline. Programs like this are super important to get/keep the mindshare we'll need to see the transition through.
